Therapeutic Approach

My approach to therapy is flexible, varied, and tailored to your individual needs. I tend to describe my approach as either 'exploratory' or 'structured' therapy, as outlined below. However, in practice, our sessions may incorporate elements from both approaches. I offer both short-term and longer-term interventions, and we will decide together what best suits you during our initial consultation, with ongoing reviews throughout our work together.

Exploratory Psychotherapy

Much of my work adopts an exploratory approach to therapy, drawing on psychoanalytic, trauma-informed, and attachment-based models. This approach aims to help people understand their behaviour, thoughts, and feelings more deeply. By exploring your experiences, we hope you will gain a deeper understanding of yourself and consider ways in which you could enact change. There is a particular emphasis on the meanings we ascribe to our actions and motivations. We may be interested in understanding how past experiences continue to influence you in the present. This does not imply an exclusive focus on your childhood; however, we will consider how it, along with other significant life events, may have shaped you.

Our focus will be on your experience of the world, aiming to understand your relationship with yourself and others and its impact on your mental health. We will explore how your relational experiences might influence your coping mechanisms for current challenges. It's possible that some coping strategies you've developed are now hindering your ability to live as you wish. While you may be aware of some of these patterns, others might be outside your awareness. Our therapy aims to enhance your understanding of these patterns, assisting you in contemplating changes to improve your relationships, mental health, and overall enjoyment of life.

Structured Psychotherapy

In structured psychotherapy, we may utilise models such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These approaches are more practical. Upon establishing a mutual understanding of your issues, we will embark on learning new coping skills and problem-solving techniques. We will examine patterns of behaviour or unhelpful thinking styles that contribute to your challenges. Our efforts will be directed towards goals we establish together, with a focus on the present.

Your active participation in your therapy will be greatly encouraged. This includes undertaking tasks between sessions, which may involve practising skills learned in therapy, monitoring your symptoms, or experimenting with new behaviours. This active engagement is crucial for the effectiveness of structured psychotherapy, as it applies what has been discussed in sessions to your everyday life, thereby facilitating change and improvement in your mental health and well-being.

Sessions

Sessions last 50 minutes and take place at the same time each week.

I have a 48-hour cancellation policy for initial and/or one-off appointments.

Arranging an Initial Consultation

You can arrange an initial consultation by messaging me via the contact page or by emailing me at drmatthewknox@gmail.com.

Feeling uneasy or anxious about starting therapy is quite common. Experienced therapists understand this and are equipped to guide you through the process. I recommend an initial, complimentary 15-minute phone call to discuss your situation. Should you wish to proceed, we will then schedule an initial consultation.

During this consultation, I will conduct a comprehensive assessment, which may span one or two sessions. We will take the time to fully understand your issues and how they manifest in your life. This will include considering both your current difficulties and your history, to gauge what impact this may have on your present situation.

Research has consistently shown that the compatibility between therapist and patient is crucial for the success of therapy. In our preliminary sessions, you will have the chance to meet me and assess whether the therapy I offer could be right for you. You might opt for a discrete, short-term engagement, lasting either the duration of the consultation or between 6-16 sessions. Alternatively, you may prefer to embark on ongoing, long-term psychotherapy. Once you decide on your preferred approach, we can schedule a regular weekly slot that will be reserved for you.

Who do I see in treatment?

The reasons that people come to see me for therapy are diverse. They may have struggled with depression and anxiety for a significant portion of their lives yet found it challenging to ask for support. Alternatively, they might discover they are incapable of sustaining long-term relationships. Some may experience anxiety and panic in social situations, which impedes their ability to connect with others, or they may be dealing with performance anxiety that obstructs their career progression. Anxiety could also manifest in other forms, such as compulsions and obsessive thoughts, they may then experience feelings of shame when sharing these experiences.

Others might feel lonely or find it difficult to connect with people in their lives. This could manifest as specific sexual difficulties or a pattern of feeling close and then distant to those around them. An individual might feel satisfied in their work life but find other areas lacking. Maybe they are concerned that they are sabotaging their personal life by putting so much energy into work. Alternatively, they may struggle to concentrate in the workplace and feel they are not achieving their full potential.

Regardless of the reason, we all experience life differently and express our issues in unique ways. At the core of my approach to therapy is the understanding that whatever challenge someone brings to therapy, they require careful, individual attention and consideration to comprehend and navigate their issues.
